FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Rodale Books Acquires Former Governor of New Mexico and U.S. Ambassador to the U.N., Bill Richardson’s new book How to Sweet Talk a Shark

NEW YORK, NY,  – Rodale Inc. is pleased to announce the acquisition of former Governor of New Mexico and U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, Bill Richardson’s new book HOW TO SWEET TALK A SHARK: Strategies and Stories from a Master Negotiator, co-authored with Emmy-winning “The Daily Show” writer Kevin Bleyer. Rodale Books Senior Editor Mike Zimmerman acquired world rights, with publication set for Fall 2013.

Saddam Hussein, Fidel Castro, the Taliban, the government of North Korea, Slobodan Milosevic—these are just some of the “complicated” people and organizations Governor Bill Richardson has engaged in high-stakes, face-to-face negotiations with. In fact, Richardson has done such a good job of it, that he’s been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize three times. Now, he will share these incredible stories and offer readers a lesson in how to manage relations with the sociopaths, dictators, and narcissists in their own lives.

Said Governor Richardson, “Without a doubt, the questions I most often get asked involve trying to understand how I negotiated with the likes of Hugo Chavez or Sudanese President Bashir--people are fascinated by how I’ve dealt with some of the world’s most difficult people. In HOW TO SWEET TALK A SHARK, I will share these intense, sometimes absurd, stories and will reveal the tactics I’ve employed in order to show how these can also be applied to colleagues, in-laws, spouses, and pretty much anyone proving to be less-than-reasonable. And I am thrilled to be partnering with Rodale Books—they have proven to be experts at publishing books of substance that are also compelling and relatable. I look forward to working with them to ensure that HOW TO SWEET TALK A SHARK becomes a go-to resource for anyone looking to navigate the choppy waters of interpersonal relations. The fact is, we all deal with challenging people in our lives—the ones I’ve encountered just happen to be a bit more notable.”

Said VP/Publisher, Rodale Books Publisher Mary Ann Naples, “Rodale has long been committed to publishing thought leaders and opinion makers whose work aims to answer important questions and help our readers live better lives. Governor Richardson’s new book fits squarely into that mission and we are honored to be working with him. In these uncertain times, readers need to be reassured that dealing with the difficult people in their lives doesn’t have to be an insurmountable challenge. HOW TO SWEET TALK A SHARK will provide the much-needed tools to help readers achieve the outcomes they desire and get to the ‘sane place,’ faster—and with sense of humor firmly intact.”

HOW TO SWEET TALK A SHARK will be co-written with Kevin Bleyer, the 2012 Emmy Award-winning veteran writer at “The Daily Show,” contributor to President Barack Obama’s speeches and author of Me The People: One Man’s Selfless Quest to Rewrite the Constitution, as well as co-author of the #1 New York Times Bestseller Earth: The Book.

HOW TO SWEET TALK A SHARK will be published in Fall 2013.

ABOUT GOVERNOR BILL RICHARDSON: Bill Richardson sought the Democratic nomination for President of the United States in 2008.

Richardson recently completed his second term as Governor of New Mexico in January 2011.   He was elected Governor in 2002 and re-elected in 2006 with the support of 69 percent of voters, representing the largest margin of victory for any Governor in state history.

Prior to being elected governor, Richardson enjoyed a very successful and fulfilling career in public service; academia and the private sector-few can match his wide-ranging experience and his level of dedication to protecting the rights and improving the quality of life of people in New Mexico, the United States and around the world.

Richardson served for 15 years in northern New Mexico representing the 3rd Congressional District. Richardson served in 1997 as the U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, and in 1998, he was unanimously confirmed by the U.S. Senate as Secretary of the U.S. Department of Energy.

While a congressman, Richardson served as a special envoy on many sensitive international missions. He successfully won the release of hostages, American servicemen and prisoners in North Korea, Iraq, Cuba and Sudan.  Richardson has been nominated several times for the Nobel Peace Prize.

As Governor, Richardson's bold governing style moved New Mexico forward in several important areas, including clean energy, education, public safety, environment, transportation, healthcare and $1 billion in tax cuts for New Mexicans.

He made New Mexico the "Clean Energy State" by requiring utilities to meet 20% of New Mexico's electrical demand from renewable sources; and established a Renewable Energy Transmission Authority to deliver New Mexico's world-class renewable resources to market.

During his administration, more than $1 billion was invested in public schools, including professional salaries to recruit and retain quality teachers; shifting education money from administration to the classroom; and increased access to early-childhood education.

Richardson spearheaded a new commercial space industry in New Mexico anchored by Spaceport America, which is partnering with private tenants like Virgin Galactic to launch tourists into space.  During his term as Governor - New Mexico’s film industry exploded – investments made resulted in more than 140 major film and television productions and an estimated economic impact of more than $3-billion.

Richardson expanded access to quality health care by implementing several Insure New Mexico! initiatives that are affordable coverage solutions for New Mexico's small employers, nonprofit agencies, individuals and options for every New Mexico child under the age of 12 years old.

Before serving as Governor, in 2001, Richardson assumed the chairmanship of Freedom House, a private, non-partisan organization that promotes democracy worldwide. He also worked as a business consultant in Santa Fe and served on several boards including the Natural Resource Defense Council and United Way International.

Since entering life as a private citizen in 2011, Richardson was named chairman of APCO Worldwide's executive advisory service Global Political Strategies (GPS) and Special Envoy for the Organization of American States (OAS), adding another platform for initiatives within peace and reconciliation in the Western hemisphere.  In addition, Richardson serves as Senior Fellow for Latin America at Rice University's James A. Baker III Institute for Public Policy and has joined several non-profit and for- profit boards, including Abengoa's International Advisory Board, the fifth largest biofuels producer in the U.S., WRI World Resources Institute, Refugees International, and is Chairman of the International Council for Science and the Environment.

Bill Richardson has authored two books, “Between Worlds” and “Leading by Example.”

Richardson has been married to his high school sweetheart, Barbara, for more than 40 years. Richardson received a BA from Tufts in 1970 and a MA from Tuft's Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy in 1971.
